An Affective Behavior Model for Intelligent Tutors

چکیده
We describe an affective behavior model (ABM) for intelligent tutoring systems. The model is a Dynamic Decision Network that selects tutorial actions based on both the current affective and pedagogical state of a student, as well as on the assessment of the expected effect of each available action on the student. We integrated the ABM with an educational game to learn number factorization, and here we present the preliminary results of a user study to evaluate its effectiveness.

A System Architecture for Affective Meta Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) constitute an alternative to expert human tutors, providing direct customized instruction and feedback to students. ITSs could positively impact education if adopted on a large scale, but doing that requires tools to enable their mass production. This circumstance is the key motivation for this work. We present a component-based approach for a system architec...
متن کاملImplicit Strategies for Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Nowadays several researches in Intelligent Tutoring Systems are oriented toward developing emotionally sensitive tutors. These tutors use different instructional strategies addressing both learners’ cognitive and affective dimensions and rely, for most of them, on explicit strategies and direct interventions. In this paper we propose a new approach to augment these tutors with new implicit stra...
متن کاملPassively Classifying Student Mood and Performance within Intelligent Tutors
It has been long recognized that successful human tutors are capable of adapting instruction to mitigate barriers (e.g., withdrawal or frustration) to learning during the one-to-one tutoring process. A significant part of the success of human tutors is based on their perception of student affect (e.g., mood or emotions). To at least match the capabilities of human tutors, computer-based intelli...
متن کاملOpening the Door to Non-programmers: Authoring Intelligent Tutor Behavior by Demonstration
Intelligent tutoring systems are quite difficult and time intensive to develop. In this paper, we describe a method and set of software tools that ease the process of cognitive task analysis and tutor development by allowing the author to demonstrate, instead of programming, the behavior of an intelligent tutor. We focus on the subset of our tools that allow authors to create “Pseudo Tutors” th...
متن کاملA Facial Expression Analysis Component for Affective Tutoring Systems
Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) provide individualised instruction. They offer many advantages over the traditional classroom scenario: they are always available, non-judgemental and provide tailored feedback resulting in increased and effective learning. However, they are still not as effective as one-on-one human tutoring. The next generation of intelligent tutors are expected to be able t...
